This was the year my parents were married. The traditional and modern manufacture of glass, glass research, and its applications.
Britain has attained a leading position in the manufacture of glass. Sand purification is carried out on a considerable scale. There are shots of furnaces, of bubbling molten glass, of glass being ground and polished and of the cutter at work. Scientific instruments and perfectly balanced lenses are made in Britain today. The Corning Museum heard of these glassmakers still using methods written down by the ancient Sumerians mentioned on Cuneiform tablets. So in 1977 they sent an expedition to the Afghanistan city of Herat to record these guys at work. Amazing video.

Even though it was written in 1921 and has references to using a foot bellows, it is something you should check out if you are interested in learning flame work glass blowing. Also called Lampworking A lot of techniques for blowing glass tubes (i.e. Art glass, pipes and other applications) were pioneered by people now dead and gone.
